"Totally Sweet Times in Maebashi"

17 June 2009
My companion, Sakamoto Shimai is 22. She is the oldest of 5 kids. Her parents are church members. Her parents joined the church a long time ago. Her dad was like 30 and her mom was like 25 when they got married. Her dad served a mission, I am pretty sure. She is on her 6th transfer, so one ahead of me. She is really positive and smiley and a great missionary. She did 2 years of arithmetic in college and graduated before her mission. She is not sure what she wants to be after the mission. She has bad allergies right now so that is tough. Sorry I haven't sent pictures, even of Yamamoto Shimai! I gotta get up on these things! Oh yeah, Sakamoto Shimai likes Spongebob! Yeah!

I know Deana will do a super job as Young Women president. Please tell Bryant hello for me.

I dunno about wrap up stuff for President Hill. President Albrecht gets here on the first of July 1 believe. I think they said President Albrecht wanted to do a tour of the apartments when he came. Although unawares of his "tour" I have been slowly cleaning and organizing the apartment last and this transfer. I found two bottles of bath and body works lotion- one a bottle and the other the thick creamy tube kind. Score!

Teaching is good. We had a lesson yesterday. Her name was Riku. She is 20 and Chinese. We found her housing two days ago. It was raining at the time so we housed at an apartment. Turns out there were 6 or so Chinese kids, 20 to 24 in age, who came to Japan to learn English. They lived in different apartments, some together etc etc. Riku and her roommate, a classmate, invited us into their home and we set up a church tour lesson for the next day with Riku. Her roommate said it was hard to be in Japan because of the language and the expenses. Their home was humble and had few things. Riku came to our church after accidentally going to another. She came with, not her roommate, but another Chinese friend whom we had met in that apartment while housing. I was glad the friend came because she knew more Japanese than Riku. We brought a Chinese book of Mormon and pamphlets for Riku, but we found out the pamphlets were the kind of Chinese they read in Hong Kong and other places, but not China. However, they could read- it was just kinda hard and different. Luckily we had two copies of the Book of Mormon in Chinese, one in each kind of Chinese. Me and Sakamoto Shimai didn't know which one was which so we brought both.

Riku did not take the Book of Mormon. She related to us how her mom said reading something besides the Bible was not good. However, we did give her lesson one and two pamphlets.

Last transfer Yamamoto Shimai went around without a map. Yes, it is true. So I learned where things were by just going along and reading signs. Seriously, I never even noticed the signs until last transfer, probably because they are written in characters. I think they are very helpful though. Ahead of time I can learn what the kanji looks like for where we are going and that is helpful. Anywho, I have a funny story... and 10 minutes to tell it in b/c I was interrupted by a phone call from a missionary, Elder Olsen, regarding accompanying him on piano for a violin thing for zone conference on Monday. Anyways....

Actually, I will have to draw a map of what happened in the story, but long story short we had gone in a circle to get somewhere last transfer and this transfer I figured out that we had gone in a circle, but hadn't realized it because we had missed the circle part by about 2 or 3 blocks.
Hardy har!

But I do have another funny story. We were housing and met a lady walking her baby, so we talked to her and gave her a chirashi, flyer, for church. Then, the next day we went back to the same place to house, cause it was a big housing area. Anywho, we knocked on her door! We didn't know she lived there. Then, again, today, we went back to the same area and ran into her again, walking her baby. Yeah!

The weather here is..... rain. Every day. Seriously. The rain drops are really fat. The funny part is that it is warm outside. I am eternally grateful to Yamamoto Shimai because she gave me her kappa! Before I was using the one from my trainer and it was size 3L and old and smelled highly questionable. Yamamoto Shimai's kappa is about an inch short, but really fits great. Yahoo!! Oh, and sometimes there is a downpour. It happened twice. And twice we heard thunder and it was HUGE, like earthquake style or something. It was a deep sounding thunder and longer than I was used to. I hear Gunma ken is famous for its thunder.

Sakamoto Shimai made spaghetti sauce using ketchup. Whoa. So I copied and did the same thing today. I put some onions, pork, ketchup, and egg, some poultry seasoning I found. Yup. It was good times.

Happy Father's Day! I hope your band stuff goes well! Dad, I love you so much! Thanks for being a great example. Really, truly. I am so lucky to have a dad who honors the priesthood and likes to spend time with the family!

Love, Sister McMahan
