"Mormon sho motte imasu ka?"

28 Sept 2009
Chiaki san (investigator) is incredibly great. We taught her lesson one again. Both her daughters listened. Do you remember the lady we met in the park who stopped us after we walked by by saying "Are you Mormons?" She is the friend that Chiaki san was talking about! Do you remember? She has a friend who has a daughter that lives in America and is Mormon. Chiaki san said "My friend said she talked to you...." and we froze because we realized we had met her in the park! I tell ya, this Chiaki lady is really a miracle. She couldn't come to church on Sunday, but she came to the meal afterwards (it was ward conference). I had some people come and introduce themselves to her. She really hit it off with Yamada Shimai and a boy in the ward has a crush on one of her daughters. Oh, and the daughter in America might come to Japan in November. So, we can have a lesson with her as a joint! Whoa.

We visited an inactive woman named Suzuki Shimai. She is over the top and the first thing she said was "I'm totally inactive..." It was pretty funny. Her two inactive daughters were there. They're 22 or so. One kinda had interest. Suzuki Shimai has lots of money I think. She has tons of talents and just does tons of stuff. She cuts hair, does flower arranging, has a private restaurant, and rents bridal dresses. She is totall
y great!

Kinda sidetrack, but I forgot to tell you last week that while we were at the temple two of our elders hiked Mount Fuji..
. all the way to the top. The didn't wear sunblock and got sunburned. They said "we forgot to bring our brains on that one" It's just so funny cause people wear serious hiking great to climb and it takes 6 hours to get to the top after you take a car part way. They went up in just their normal P-day clothes and a jacket and packed some sandwiches and onigiri. So funny.

We have a new investigator, Sejas Shimai's daughter. They are from Bolivia. The mom and dad are in Japan. Their daughter has some slight interest in the gospel so we taught her. Her daughter has a son who is 11 and comes to church every week. When we went over there we saw another boy in addition to the son and he was 15. Okay, so get this, the grandma has 14 kids!! Her daughter and her daughter's son and this other boy who is a cousin live in Japan. They speak Spanish so that's kind of sweet.

We also have another new investigator, a girl who the elders found housing. She is C
hinese and her name is Chosen- san. We taught her a lesson. She has zero christian background so we told her about God. She is lost and kinda confused about religion. She asked if the devil was real and that her friend saw someone with a distorted or scary face and something to that effect. Anyways, she really has no knowledge of Christianity. So, it is really interesting to teach her. I haven never met anyone who knew absolutely nothing about God and Christ.

We ran into a grandma in the park this past week. We started talking to her. She was completely overjoyed. She had a daughter who lived in America and now she was all alone. She tried to get us to come over for dinner right then and there but we had to go to Chosen's. She talked to us for about 20 minutes. She was really really happy to see us and shocked we could understand Japanese.

We got another investigator this wee
k. Her name is Nakazato san. She is a referral from the honbu. She just moved here from another mission. She has a son who is about 12 and he is severely autistic. She met the missionaries 7 years ago. Elders found her housing. Then the shimai taught her. Then she lost contact for 3 years or something and then the elders found her randomly housing again but then she moved here and became our referral. She loves the Book of Mormon but is afraid to tell her husband about it.

Mei-chan ( a teen investigator who wants to be baptized) still needs to talk to her parents. We made her a candy gram the other day or so. I think I told you. She had never seen a candy gram before. We took a picture.

We had 4 investigators at church on Sunday!! I have never had that many come to church. Sis Sejas, Takano san, Sano san, and Mei chan. Sis Sejas went to the Spanish/Portuguese class, Mei chan went to band practice (after sacrament meeting), and Takano and Sano stayed for the whole block. Also, Wayne came to church. He's the inactive guy we found housing. He came with the elders. He is just full of life and, like I said, plays Santa, if that gives you an idea. He is really witty and just a character.

Oh, and another cool story. Yesterday we left out apartment and first thing we did was turn the corner and fill up Green Shimai's tires. Then a guy come up on his motor bike and asks if we are Mormons. Then he said "Do you have a Book of Mormon?" I double checked to make sure I heard right. Apparently his friend was Mormon and dies 5 years ago. Instead of giving him a Book of Mormon then and there I got his number and referred him to the elders. They have an appointment with him tonight. I think he was Japanese but maybe a bit of something else. His accent sounded different. He was in a hurry when he talked to us. I have never had someone come up to me and said "Mormon sho motte imasu ka" or "do you have a Book of Mormon on you?" I was wondering if he was real when we road away or maybe some weird angel guy. I dunno. It was kinda fast and a noisy car or two road by so It was kinda tricky to listen.

Yesterday we were housing and I saw.... blinds! I realized I had never seen blinds in Japan up until that point and time. Whoa.

And another funny thing, one of our
joints was talking to Takano san during the lesson and she said "So, we get resurrected to age 30..." and then turns to us and says something about Moroni being resurrected. We were like "Yeah, about 30? I dunno. We just resurrected and are looking good." Normally we would be worried about deep doctrine during a lesson but for Takano san it was ok. She says that her husband might notice a change in her from taking the lessons (or something to that effect) and going to church and she thinks they should be in it together. I wanted to say, "Yes, that is true. This gospel is a gospel of change and progression and it is to help us obtain eternal families."

K, well I have 25 more minutes to write but I am gonna send this baby off and maybe I will write another if something comes to mind. I love you so much and thanks for spending so much money to send stuff to me in Japan!!

Love, Sister McMahan
